International students advised to be wary of targeted phone scam

Share

If you’re an international student in Canada or know someone who is, you may be the victim of targeted scam telephone calls.

This scary fraud phenomenon has been occurring more and more frequently across the country, as international students have been reporting calls from individuals claiming to be employees of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

These people then threaten them with arrest and deportation if they don’t acquire immigration lawyers. The students are then swindled out of thousands of dollars, believing that they are acquiring a lawyer.

The Government of Canada has issued an advisory, warning students against taking these calls seriously, as the IRCC will never contact anyone in person, online, or by telephone to collect fees or fines to avoid deportation.

So if you get a call like the one described, just hang up and report it to your local authorities!
