Woodwynn Farms in Central Saanich is shutting down and will be sold

Woodwynn Farms in Central Saanich says it is shutting down and selling the property after Agricultural Land Commission denied a request for additional housing.

Creating Homefulness Society’s board of directors issued a statement Thursday saying financial backers have withdrawn after the ALC denied a proposal to build 40 units of temporary housing for patients.

“After nearly a decade of commitment by staff, volunteers, community members, philanthropists, neighbours and residents it is a sad day for us all. The program in its current state is unable to provide a meaningful contribution to the overwhelming need for improved solutions for those most at risk,” the statement reads. “The decision by the ALC fundamentally prevents the Creating Homefulness Society from making a significant contribution to the fight against homelessness and addiction.”

Back in December, residents at the Woodwynn Farms rehabilitation facility woke up to see “No Occupancy” signs posted on their doors. Six people were living on the farm at the time; now there are only four.

The 78-hectare Woodwynn Farms prepares homeless people for life off of the streets.
