9th Annual Gingerbread Showcase raises over $50,000 to help build houses in the community

2017 ended with some amazing news for the organizers of the 9th annual Gingerbread Showcase.

Every year, the event focuses on having the public donate to vote for their favourite gingerbread masterpiece, and in the end, all proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity – an organization that builds affordable housing for low income residents in Victoria.

The display of beautiful (and delicious) Canada-themed holiday treats at the Parkside Hotel & Spa this year drew in more spectators than they’ve ever had before, raising a total of $51,340 – that’s $1,000 more than last year!

2017 People’s Choice Award Winner

After over 14,000 votes were cast by the public, the winner of the 2017 People’s Choice Award was announced!

This edible scene was created by talented local baking team, the Boa Constructors – Sue Buck, Candy Porter, Emma Day, Jayne Barker and Dianne Flood.

They weren’t the only winners! Just before the showcase was opened to the public, professional judges declared their favourites in several categories

1st Place Professional

(Habitat Victoria/Gingerbread Showcase)

This delicious and seemingly savoury creation is entitled “Everybody eats when they come to my gingerbread house”, and was made by Daniela Lucchiti.

1st Place Amateur

(Habitat Victoria/Gingerbread Showcase)

And this cozy Canadian home scene was designed by Jesika Edison, and is called “Growing up Canadian”.

Much needed funds for Habitat for Humanity

“It was our first year hosting the Gingerbread Showcase in our new location and we could not be happier with how the event went,” stated Trina White, General Manager of The Parkside Hotel & Spa.

“We are proud to help Habitat for Humanity Victoria raise much needed funds to help families living in need of a safe, decent place to live and look forward to another successful event in 2018!”

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year’s event!
