Don’t be alarmed if you hear sirens go off next week!

Authorities are conducting an early tsunami and earthquake warning system testing in areas near Port Renfrew, Pacheedaht First Nation, and Jordan River between Sunday, December 10th and Friday, December 15th.

Intermittent siren wails can be expected throughout the day followed by a full test. Here’s a tentative schedule of when they will go off:

  • Jordan River: Sunday, December 10th, starting at 11:30 AM
  • Port Renfrew and Pacheedaht: Tuesday, December 12th – Friday, December 15th
It will go off at random intervals between 9 AM and 4 PM, followed by a full test.

These tests may be a little disruptive in the short run, but are being conducted in preparation for 2018, when they will become fully operational.

So in case of a natural disaster, the Western coast of Vancouver Island will be fully prepared for evacuation.
