On Friday, December 15th, Andrew Jonathan Belcourt was convicted of killing 52-year-old Victoria man Leslie Hankel in his apartment, and has been sentenced to life in prison.
According to a CTV News report, back in 2010 Belcourt (who was 19-years-old at the time) and his accomplice broke into Hankel’s apartment on Pembroke Street.
A needless death
They believed that Hankel was in possession of a large amount of marijuana – although it was later found that this was not true – and intended to rob him of it.
Belcourt was armed with a shotgun and fired it at the victim, striking the side of his head and killing him almost immediately.
No more escaping the law
Andrew Jonathan Belcourt was initially found guilty of the crime, but managed to successfully appeal the ruling in 2012.
Then in February 2017, he was again found guilty of the same second degree murder, and as of Friday, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years.
