A Victoria Police officer is recovering after a harrowing encounter with a suspect in Esquimalt on Sunday morning.

At about 4:00 a.m. on November 12, an officer responded to a call of an “unwanted person” on the 1100-block of Lyall Street.

Upon arrival, the officer found a man who had been attempting to get in the back door of a residence. The man attacked the officer as he approached.

The resulting struggle led to the officer being assaulted and then assaulted with a weapon.

Despite suffering injuries, the officer restrained the man until other officers arrived. The suspect was taken into custody and the officer went to a hospital.
