Greater Victoria Harbour Authority plans $7 million project in light of increased cruise ship traffic

It looks like Ogden Point is about to get a new dolphin – and no, we’re not talking about the adorable aquatic mammal.

According to a Vancouver Sun report, the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority is all set to bring a new dolphin – a structure used to moor large ships – to Ogden Point, in addition to the existing dolphin at Pier B.

The project will cost approximately $7 million, and will be initially used to serve the 1,000 feet long Norwegian Bliss during next year’s cruise-ship season.

This new development is a result of the fact that this year, Victoria welcomed 239 cruise ship calls – the largest number ever recorded for the city.

According to a 2016 study conducted by the GVHA, the cruise-ship industry had an economic impact of approximately $130 million per year in Victoria.

The project is expected to be completed in 2018.
