Full driver doors to enhance safety on BC Transit buses

Share

This week, BC Transit has announced a new pilot measure to keep drivers safe while on the job.

Full driver doors on buses is the new concept being tested out. It is meant to increase safety, decrease distractions, and overall improve driving conditions for BC Transit employees.

Victoria, Abbotsford, and Kelowna will be the first cities to have buses with full driver doors installed during the proof of concept, at a cost of approximately $6,000 each.

To start with, three buses in Victoria will be outfitted with these Plexiglas barriers, as well as one in Abbotsford and one in Kelowna.

The driver doors are being implemented by BC Transit in partnership with the Province of B.C., WorkSafeBC, the local unions and local government partners.

“BC Transit’s top priority is to deliver a safe, effective and efficient transit system,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit President and Chief Executive Officer.

“Introducing the full driver door will build on our commitment to improving the on-board welfare, security and comfort of passengers and drivers alike.”

This measure is the latest in a series of safety initiatives, including the installment of CCTV cameras, and an operator emergency notification protocol on buses.
