The City of Victoria is calling all youth poets!

If you’re aged 14-24, consider yourself a wordsmith, and interested in year-long mentorship in a variety of leadership and visionary skills, send an application in!

The Youth Poet Laureate has the opportunity to develop a community youth poetry event, reach out to vulnerable youth populations, as well as encourage peer to peer inspiration through new creations.

It’s an honorary 1-year position, from January 1st to December 31st, 2018, and the position will receive a $1750 honorarium along with $1000 of project funding.

How to apply

Applicants must be 14-24 years old, reside in the Capital Region, and can submit their own application or be nominated by someone else.

The application must include three original poems in any format including written, audio or video; a letter of intent outlining the applicant’s vision for the Youth Poet Laureate position; three sample project ideas; and a resume noting their community engagement experience related to school, work, or volunteering.

The deadline for application is October 31st, 2017 at 4pm.

The position was created in 2013 by the Victoria Youth Council, and aims to give strong youth voices access to the community.

It is funded by the City of Victoria, with project support from the Greater Victoria Public Library.

Applications are being accepted by email or by mail to: City of Victoria, Arts, Culture and Events Office, 720 Douglas Street (Victoria Conference Centre Admin Offices), Victoria, BC V8W 3M7.
