Drivers, start your engines… and remember to yield to traffic already in the circle when entering a roundabout.

This Wednesday, the City of Langford’s newest stretch of road opens to the public – the last segment of the West Shore Parkway.

After approximately two years of construction, the official opening will take place on October 4 at 11:00 a.m.

“We’re pretty excited. It’s a big project for our staff and everyone who worked on it,” Michelle Mahovlich, director of engineering with the City of Langford, told the Goldstream Gazette.

A Modern Connection: Kettle Lake Drive to Langford Parkway

The final section of the Westshore Parkway is in red. It opens to the public on Wednesday at 11:00 am.

Along with a new route, the West Shore Parkway also offers a modern approach to traffic flow.

The road has no traffic lights, instead relying on roundabouts. With less stopping, not only will the parkway be a theoretically smoother drive, it’ll also decrease the greenhouse gas emissions that come from idling.

Other features of the new road include landscaping, solar-powered pedestrian crossings, and cyclist and pedestrian connections between the YMCA-YWCA in Westhills, Belmont Secondary, and the City Centre Park’s recreation facilities.

The unveiling of the final section follows last month’s opening of the middle section between Westhills and Sooke Road.

Overall, the West Shore Parkway stretches 3.5 kilometres, cost approximately $22.5 million, and provides a route between the Trans-Canada Highway and Sooke Road.
