Fort Street’s beloved business-dog Cody passed away today

We have sad news to report.

Downtown Victoria’s favourite store greeter, Cody the Dog, has passed away after 14 years of greeting Victorians at his humans’ store.

Cody spent his life dutifully giving licks and receiving pats from Victorians who visited Charmaine’s Past and Present furniture and housewares store on Fort Street.

Last year, he was in the news because city bylaws were stopping his owners from letting him hang out unleashed on the sidewalk – where he had been welcoming visitors for 13 years.

But Cody was an extremely gentle, beloved dog and the sidewalk was his favourite spot.

Many Victorians were outraged by the bylaw officers’ ruling, and felt that they should be focusing on bigger issues instead of banning a friendly dog from the sidewalk.

In the end, Cody still got to step out to his favourite spot from time to time and remained a loyal business-doggy until the end of his days.
