Meet Swoop, Canada.

After months of behind-the-scenes planning, WestJet revealed the new name and logo of its “ultra-low-cost” airline, which will begin flying by June of 2018.

Swoop will operate as a separate brand within the WestJet family. It promises to provide Canadians with a no-frills, lower-fare travel option.

“The name Swoop denotes exactly what we plan to do,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet’s Executive Vice-President, Strategy in a statement. “It’s a powerful verb that demonstrates we plan to swoop in to the Canadian market with a new business model that will provide lower fares and greater opportunity for more Canadians to travel.”

WestJet headquarters will be nearby to aid the launch of their new brand, as Swoop will also be based in Calgary.

“The city offers Swoop the opportunity to save costs through shared services with WestJet’s corporate head office, the availability of existing infrastructure, and talented, experienced WestJetters to draw from.” said Cummings.

Their website has launched, and although no prices or routes are currently shown. WestJet Airlines said it will offer fares that are 40 per cent cheaper than those currently available in Canada.

It should also be noted that while ticket fare will be cheap, only your seat is included.

“With a base price that starts with just a seat, we’re creating a ‘la carte service that puts you, the traveler, in the driver seat. You can add a snack, checked baggage or in-flight entertainment at an additional cost – your choice.” reads the new website.

Swoop will begin selling tickets in early 2018, and start flying customers in June of 2018.
