You can be a part of BC’s biggest ever collective earthquake drill

Drop, cover and hold on! Have you registered yet for the annual Great ShakeOut?

The 2017 Shake Out BC earthquake drill will take place on Oct. 19th at 10:19 am, and the organizers are hoping to make this the biggest one yet.

Last year, more than 770,000 British Columbians took part in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills, and this year, organizers are aiming for over a million participants.

“With the recent severe earthquakes that have hit Mexico it is so imperative that we are all prepared should it happen here,” said Kelly L Kurta, who, along with Dave Cockle, Fire Chief of Oak Bay, is encouraging people to sign up.
The drill is the largest of its kind in Canada; an annual event aimed at raising awareness for earthquake preparedness, including ensuring families have adequate first aid supplies and bottled water.

How To Register

So make sure your participation is counted by registering your family, organization or business at www.shakeoutbc.ca/register.

If you enrolled last year, you need to renew for 2017. Just follow the link above.

You can also help drive participation by checking whether organizations in your community are taking part. A list of who’s registered is available here: http://www.shakeoutbc.ca/whoisparticipating/.

If you don’t see local schools, governments or non-profit groups, give them a call and encourage them to participate. Practicing what to do during an earthquake increases the odds people will respond correctly when one occurs.
