One of Canada’s most iconic comedy shows will say goodbye next spring. The Rick Mercer Report has announced that this season – its 15th – will be its last.

Since 2004, when the show debuted as Rick Mercer’s Monday Report, Mercer has become a staple on Canadian television. His satirical take on politics, along with heartwarming field pieces and hilarious sketches have endeared him to viewers and critics alike.

So far, the show has garnered 16 Gemini and Canadian Screen Awards, and if the 15th season lives up to Mercer’s billing as the “greatest season yet”, that number could increase.

Along with the awards and acclaim, Mercer has also done a great deal of charitable work. Since 2007, each season of theRick Mercer Report has ended each with a fundraising campaign called Spread the Net.

In total, over $1 million has been raised so far to help protect the lives of almost 32 million people by contributing to the delivery of over 15.3 million malaria-preventing bed nets to families in Africa.

Future Undecided

In Mercer’s announcement, he admitted that he had “no idea” what the future held for him.

But with his widespread popularity, it’s unlikely he’ll have to do too much ranting about finding work.
