Owning buildings in Victoria isn’t as hard as everyone makes it out to be.
That’s because until September 30th, the Colwood Pub building is available for any parties interested in taking ownership. The cost? Same as a breath of fresh air; zero dollars.
All you have to do is move the building from its current site at Colwood Corners by October 15th, and a 1936-Tudor style building is all yours.
Of course, some people can barely move stuff from their home in a month, let alone an entire building. But the opportunity is there.
There’s interest, but will enough be done?
According to Rodney Rao, Development Manager at Onni Group, there has been conversation to preserve the building.
“We’ve received a lot of interest in the future of the old Colwood pub. Well unfortunately, we are not able to refurbish or restore the building into operable conditions at the Colwood Corners site, we understand that it may hold nostalgia for many in the community,” he said in a statement.
They are hoping the opportunity will further the lifespan of the building. Most recently, the Colwood pub operated as the Crossroad Bar and Grill.
Discussion around the building has been provoked by Onni’s recent announcement for proposed development plans at Colwood Corners.
The first phase will comprise of three mid-rise residential buildings and an additional 152,000 square feet of commercial space, including one major grocery store.
A Little on the History
It all started back in 1879 when Andrew J. Bechtel opened the first Colwood Hotel. Unfortunately it was somewhat ill-fated and burned down just before Christmas in 1895.
A two-storey framed, square building took its place not long after, built by the new proprietor Mr. Campbell; this was later enlarged and sold to a Mrs. Miller who became the owner of the Goldstream Inn.
The current Tudor-style building was built in 1936 by George T. Quincey after he demolished the old Colwood Hotel. Since then the building has been extended and while it is most well-known as the Colwood Inn, the pub was most recently operated as the Cross Roads Bar and Grill.
