BC Afghanistan Memorial to be unveiled on Saturday

Share

We seldom have the opportunity to honour and give thanks to those who served in the Afghanistan campaign.

This will change on Saturday, September 30, when the BC Afghanistan Memorial is unveiled and dedicated.

Situated at the corner of Quadra and Courtney, the ceremony is open to the public. However, you can also catch the entire event live streamed on Victoria Buzz

Along with everyday citizens looking to pay their respects, several notable people will also be in attendance, including:

  • The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
  • The Honourable John Horgan, MLA, Premier of British Columbia,
  • Her Excellency Shinkai Karokhail, Ambassador of Afghanistan to Canada
  • Afghanistan veterans
  • BC’s Memorial Cross families
  • Contingents of the Navy, Army, Air Force and the RCMP on parade
  • and other dignitaries

The memorial itself arrived in Victoria earlier this summer and was made to honour the more than 40,000 Canadians who served in Afghanistan, the 163 who died during the mission, those who returned with mental and physical wounds, and the families and loved ones of them all.
