Victoria Royals have 5 players at NHL rookie camps

Five members of the Victoria Royals are headed to NHL camps this week in various locations around the hockey world.

The team announced that forwards Tyler Soy, Matthew Phillips, and Valdimir Bobylev, along with defencemen Chaz Reddekopp and Scott Walford will be taking their talents to NHL rookie camps.

Here is a look at where each player is headed this week.

1 – Tyler Soy

Soy is currently participating in the Anaheim Ducks Rookie Camp. As part of the camp, the Ducks will play the Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche, and San Jose Sharks from September 9th-12th, as part of the 2017 Rookie Showcase hosted by the Sharks.

The Cloverdale, BC product has played in 257 WHL games, all for the Royals, and has earned 235 points (115g-120a) along with 86 minutes in penalties. Over 44 career post-season games, Soy has scored 28 points (14g-14a) and 16 penalty minutes. The 6-0, 171 lb forward was named the recipient of the Brad Hornung Trophy as the WHL’s Most Sportmanlike Player for the 2015-16 season.

Soy was drafted by the Ducks in the seventh round, 205th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

2 – Chaz Reddekopp

Reddekopp will attend the Los Angeles Kings Rookie Camp. The camp starts today and will run until September 13th. The camp will include a pair of contests against the Vegas Golden Knights on September 12th & 13st at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, CA.

Over the past four seasons with the Royals, the West Kelowna, BC native has appeared in 234 regular season games and has posted 103 points (20g-83a) to go along with 261 penalty minutes. In 31 career playoff games with Victoria, Reddekopp has notched nine assists and 30 minutes in penalties.

The 6-4, 227 lb defender was drafted by the Kings in the seventh round, 187th overall, in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and signed a three-year contract this past summer.

3 – Matthew Phillips

Phillips is currently at the Calgary Flames’ prospects training camp. The forward will play in the 2017 Young Stars Classic in Penticton, BC that starts today and concludes on Monday, September 11th. Phillips and the Flames will take part in a round robin tournament against the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets.

The 5-7, 155 lb forward has collected 166 points (87g-79a) through 142 career games and was named WHL Rookie of the Year in the 2015-16 season. Phillips has also scored six goals and five assists for 11 points in 19 playoff contests.

The Flames selected Phillips, a Calgary, AB native, in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

4 – Scott Walford

Walford is currently participating in the Montreal Canadiens’ 2017 rookie camp that concludes on September 13th. As part of the camp, the Canadiens will take part in a rookie tournament this weekend where they will compete against rookies from the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Over the past two seasons with Victoria, Walford has amassed 41 points (7g-34a) in 96 games. The product of Coquitlam, BC has skated in 14 playoff contests with the Royals, the 6-2, 190 lb blueliner has recorded six points (2g-4a).

Walford was selected by the Canadiens in the third round, 68th overall, at the 2017 NHL Draft.

5 – Vladimir Bobylev

Bobylev will skate in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2017 Rookie Tournament this weekend. Players invited will compete against rookies from the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. The 6-2, 205 lb forward has appeared in 110 contests for the Royals over the past two seasons and has registered 103 points (37g-46a) along with 63 penalty minutes over that span.Bobylev was selected by Toronto in the 5
