A West Shore teacher-librarian has passed away after an August 1 cycling crash near the Johnson Street Bridge.

The cyclist, Muriel May Crompton, 55, taught at Journey Middle school in Sooke and Wishart Elementary in Colwood.

Her presence in the community and work as an educator will be sorely missed.

“We are devastated,” Fern Smythe, president of the Parent Advisory Council at Dunsmuir Middle School, told the Times Colonist. “The whole community is reeling. The shock of it. It’s going to leave a huge hole.”

Crash Still Under Investigation

Around 6:00 pm on Aug. 1, Victoria police responded to reports of a crash at Esquimalt and Harbour roads.

Crompton was then taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“This file is still under investigation, so I can’t tell you if we’ve determined anything regarding what occurred,” police spokesman Bowen Osoko told the Times Colonist on Friday. “Our investigators are still looking into it.”

Witnesses reported that the cyclist was travelling at a high speed. According to previous police statements, no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
