Crime Stoppers give Victoria drug dealers a version of the “Prisoner’s Dilemma”

Share

With the fentanyl crisis showing no few signs of abating, law enforcement agencies are trying innovative strategies to combat illicit drug distribution.

The Victoria Police Department recently released a trailer for their new web series “Fighting Fentanyl” in an attempt to educate the public on the work they do.

“Dear Illegal Drug Dealers”

But Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers appear to be trying a more cerebral tactic. In an August 23 Facebook post, they penned a message to “Illegal Drug Dealers” and gave them a dilemma.

“Are you ‘beefing’ with a rival?” the post begins. “Just a thought, but why not use us to take care of the competition by sending them to jail?”

The post then pits the rivals against one another. “We know what you are thinking, ‘I am no rat.'”, it reads. “But wait a second, what if they are the ones reading this and take us up on this offer before you do?”

The tactic is a version of the Prisoner’s Dilemma, a game theory formulated in the 1950s.

Original Post:

Dear Illegal Drug Dealers,

Are you “beefing” with a rival. Just a thought, but why not use us to take care of the competition by sending them to jail? We would like to know what they are dealing, where their stash locations are, when they reload and if they have any weapons, such as firearms.

It’s completely anonymous and we don’t ask for your name, AND we pay up to $2000 for any information that leads to an arrest.

We know what you are thinking, “I am no rat.” But wait a second, what if they are the ones reading this and take us up on this offer before you do?

You’re thinking about it now and they are thinking it about now. But, you can’t say your thinking it and they can’t say they’re thinking it, but you are all thinking it….

Wow. We just created the perfect dilemma.

All we can say now is, we look forward to hearing from you… both of you.
