Share

If you happen to walk around downtown this week, don’t be surprised to notice Flamenco music wafting through the city.

For the fifth year in a row, Victoria is hosting a flamenco festival!

Bursting with the passion and rhythm, the Victoria Flamenco Festival runs from July 24 – 30. Audiences can enjoy high-calibre flamenco shows, most of which are free!

Along with showcasing local dancers and musicians, the festival features visiting artists from Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Nova Scotia, Tacoma, and Port Angeles.

Wildly popular local dance schools Alma de España and Raino Dance, as well as new schools from Tacoma and Winnipeg will be performing in Centennial Square next weekend, July 29 – 30.

Great Shows Call For Great Venues

But Centennial Square isn’t the only venue you need to check out. Both Hermann’s Jazz Club and the Metro Theatre will also provide stages for local and imported talent.

Check out Hermann’s on Friday, July 28 (doors 6 PM; show 8 PM) for the second annual Flamenco Guitar Night. The show features four local flamenco guitarists: Gareth Owen, Jake Lee, Juan de Marias and Esteban Figueroa. Plus, Calgary protégé Harry Knight will drop in for a cameo appearance.

The following night, the Metro Theatre hosts Carmen Romero’s show “Y ENTONCES” on Saturday, July 29 (doors 7 PM; show 8 PM). This production showcases Carmen’s unique improvisational dance, and the accompaniment of jazz pianist Scott Metcalfe, singers Stephanie Pedraza and Juan de Marias, and guitarist Gareth Owen.
