Crowdfunding for aircraft-themed park in North Saanich remains far below goal

Share

The North Saanich District Council remains $38,000 short in its crowdfunding campaign to build a new airplane-themed playground at Jubilee Park.

Council aims to use the funds to complete two phases of construction. Those include adding a children’s playground and a giant aircraft-themed structure.

Before the campaign began, corporate donations came in from from Viking Air ($25,000); VIH Aviation ($6,000); VAA ($5,000); Coast Capital ($2,500) and Sea Span Ferries ($500).

Additionally, the council received a Federal Canada 150 Grant of $60,100 which will be matched by the District.

However, the crowdfunding campaign has yet to see anywhere near as much financial enthusiasm.

Launched in late April on Wayblaze.com, the campaign recently received a $5,000 boost from the Victoria Airport Authority but has only raised $960 from independent backers.

“It really is a matter of priorities and even if we take some flak for this [crowdfunding] approach, if it’s useful and beneficial it will have been a good idea,” Councillor Jack Thornburgh told Black Press earlier this month.
