Victoria Police warn of multiple wedding gift thefts

Share

The summer season brings the sun, blue skies, and beach weather, but also plenty of weddings. And weddings, in turn, bring gifts, but not all of those gifts appear to be making their way into the hands of local newlyweds.

Victoria Police today announced that they’ve received reports of multiple wedding gift thefts. Investigators have started sharing information and ask that victims who have not yet made themselves known come forward.

Gift Envelopes Targeted

The warnings are prompted by at least two investigations in which gift envelopes were targeted at local weddings. Limited details on these incidents can be released right now, but it appears that the valuables were taken from the envelopes directly.

“Wedding gift envelopes are being targeted because they often contain cash,” Cst. Matt Rutherford said. “Newlywed couples are usually reluctant to follow up with a friend or family member to inquire about an empty card, or absent gift, as they don’t want to seem ungrateful. We’re asking anyone who has noted irregularities with cards or gifts in the Victoria and Esquimalt area to come forward to our investigators.”

Investigators ask newlyweds to note card envelopes that have been tampered with, or which are missing.

Officers also provided two resources to help prevent theft:
