Thetis Lake fire on Wednesday was deliberately set by kids

Share

A brush fire at Thetis Lake Park Wednesday night was deliberately set by a group of youth.

Fire crews were called to the park at around 5 p.m. when witnesses saw about seven young men lighting the fire and running from the area.

The fire was set near the base of the Sunnyside cliffs forcing firefighters to battle the blaze from a fire boat because of the steep terrain.

The boys were located before they boarded a BC Transit bus near the Six Mile Road and Island Highway intersection.

RCMP identified the person who lit the fire. He told officers he was dared by the others to light a roll of toilet paper and throw it in the water but his throw fell short.

While being encouraged by the others, he was apparently not with the group.

His parents were contacted and alternative measures are being considered at this time as opposed to criminal charges, according to West Shore RCMP.
