Salish Eagle to make its BC Ferries debut on June 21st

Share

Travelers on the Tsawwassen – Gulf Islands ferry route could get to experience a brand new vessel this week!

The Salish Eagle officially begins service tomorrow, June 21st, at 9:10 am. Its maiden voyage will be a round trip from Tsawwassen to Salt Spring, stopping at Pender Island on the way.

The second of three Salish Class vessels, the Salish Eagle joins the Salish Orca on the water, and will soon be accompanied by the Salish Raven, which arrived in BC in early June.

BC Ferries estimates that the use of natural gas for these vessels will result in the reduction of an estimated 9,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. That’s equivalent to taking approximately 1,900 passenger vehicles off the road annually.

“After the successful introduction of Salish Orca in mid-May, we are very excited to
introduce our second new ship, Salish Eagle, into service for our Southern Gulf Islands customers,” Mark Collins, BC Ferries’ President and CEO, said in a statement. “This vessel will provide our customers safe and reliable service for years to come, and we look forward to its additional environmental and cost saving benefits as well.”

John Marston, of the Stz’uminus First Nation, designed the vessel’s new artwork.
