Police dog subdues erratic stolen car driver in Langford

A police dog named Dash proved to be a “key asset” in apprehending a suspect on Tuesday in Langford.

On June 17, at 6:40 pm West Shore RCMP received a complaint of an erratic driver at Goldstream Ave and Veterans Memorial Pkwy.

The black Dodge Neon’s license plate revealed it had been stolen in Saanich three hours previously.

After a West Shore RCMP dog handler spotted the car, police attempted a traffic stop near Veterans Memorial Pkwy and Latoria Rd. However, the suspect vehicle failed to stop. Police chose not to pursue due to concerns about public safety.

The stolen vehicle subsequently crashed into two other vehicles on Latoria Rd, becoming too damaged to continue. The police then deployed Dash, who quickly subdued the suspect.

Suspect has long criminal history

Police took the 34-year-old man to hospital for minor injuries sustained by the dog bite and then to a cell, where he was held for court the next morning. Police confirmed that he has no fixed address and a long criminal history.

“We’re glad that nobody was injured during this ordeal,” said Cst. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for West Shore RCMP. “Hopefully, this suspect will think twice next time about dashing.”

If you have any information about criminal activity, please contact the West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online www.victoriacrimestoppers.ca.
