A Victoria school starts a debate after deciding to ban cell phones for all students

Share

If you think your kid needs help managing their cell phone usage in school, you may want to consider sending them to Central Middle School in September.

The staff and principal of this Greater Victoria middle school have decided to implement a new rule that will ban students from bringing cell phones and wifi-enabled iPods to school.

Most of the feedback from parents has been positive, especially because the school has accepted that there will be an increase in the students’ use of the school phone whenever they wish to contact their family.

However, some parents have cited safety concerns as one reason to oppose the ban, although they agree that students shouldn’t be using their phones during class.

Moreover, some parents argue that having a cell phone gives their children a sense of independence outside school hours and that the school has no right to take that away.

But Principal Topher Macintosh maintains that “the detrimental impact of cellphones on [the] school is clear and overwhelming,” and has pointed out that other schools have their own, similar tactics in limiting the students’ use of personal gadgets.

So what do you think?

Should the school come up with a different way of restricting cell phone use during school hours, or is this the way to go?
