Share

They’re looking good! The City of Victoria posted a sneak peek at this year’s hanging baskets that will brighten our downtown streets this summer!

Introduced in 1937, Victoria’s hanging flower baskets are now recognized around the world. Nine different varieties of plants are used to make a Victoria sun basket, with a total of 25 plants included in each.

And without surprise, this year, some of the baskets will be themed to go along with Canada 150.

The annual roll out of Victoria’s trademark hanging baskets is turning 80 this year, so the City of Victoria is hosting two unique opportunities for the community.

On May 11, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., join City Parks staff for a free nursery tour to get a behind the scenes look at how and where the famous hanging baskets are built each year.  Get a few tips for your own summer baskets!  Meet at the Parks Office in Beacon Hill Park (100 Cook Street).  There is parking on Nursery Road.  Don’t forget to register!

On May 13, you can  ‘Build Your Own Hanging Basket.’ Get expert instruction by the Parks staff who create 1,400 hanging baskets for the City each year.

You will learn how to plant your own ‘sun basket.’  Registration is required and there is a $105 fee for the class – hardware can be returned after the summer season for a $25 cash refund. The course will take place at the Parks Headquarters in Beacon Hill Park.
