No more jay-walking!
Crews broke ground today on a new pedestrian crossing on Blanshard Street connecting Uptown Shopping Centre and Saanich Plaza, mid-way between Ravine Way and Saanich Road.
The project includes a pedestrian-activated crosswalk with five sets of tricolour traffic lights.
“Jay-walking on Blanshard Street remains a high-risk scenario for pedestrians and drivers, so we’re very happy to start construction on this significant safety improvement work,” said Geoff Nagle, director, development – Western Canada, Morguard Investments Limited.
This section of Blanshard Street is southbound only.
Construction will begin after the morning rush hour and only one lane is expected to be closed at a time.
Traffic control personnel will also be used during construction to assist with the flow of traffic along Blanshard and to/from the adjacent properties.
The project is expected to be completed and operating by the end of May.
