Alcohol suspected in crash that knocked out power to over a thousand in the West Shore

A number of West Shore homes were without power after a white Mercedes collided with a BC Hydro power box in the 700 block of Strandlund Ave in Langford, Monday night.

West Shore RCMP, Langford Fire, and B.C. Ambulance were called to the crash scene near Veterans Memorial Parkway, just after 8:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, they found a lone 37-year-old female trapped in the car and smoke was still emanating from the box.

The force of the impact caused the power box to move from its foundation several feet knocking out power to homes in Colwood, Langford and View Royal.

The lone female in the car was not seriously injured,  but was trapped for about half an hour while emergency crews waited for BC Hydro crews arrive to remove the electrical hazard.

Police kept verbal contact with the driver.

“Once the scene was determined to be safe by BC Hydro, first responders were able to extract the driver from the vehicle and transport to the hospital by ambulance to be assessed,” states Cst. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the West Shore RCMP.

West Shore RCMP determined that alcohol may have been a contributing factor. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Power was restored to most of the area by 10:30 p.m.

Video posted to the Victoria Buzz Facebook page shows the driver drove into a fence and garbage can before colliding into the power box:
