14 things to do in and around Victoria over the Family Day long weekend

The long weekend is here, and so are a number of events for the whole family to enjoy.

This year’s Family Day takes place on Monday (February 13), but there are many things happening over the weekend. Not sure what to get up to with the entire brood?

Here are five things to do around town on Family Day this year.

Sidney Family Days – A Lego Brick Festival

Saturday, February 11 – Monday, February 13

  • What: Weekend of Lego based activities. This year theme is Agricultural. Robin Sather, Canada’s only certified Lego professional, will be building a 6-foot tractor. There will be a Lego brick scavenger hunt. The Shaw Centre will have underwater Lego. VicLUG will have an elaborate display of Lego creations at Sidney Pier Hotel. Lego Movie 2 will be playing at Star Cinema, Lego play stations at Mary Winspear Centre and so much more. Please refer to the website for times and locations of each event.

  • Time: 10:00am-4:00pm each day

Family Weekend at Bear Mountain

Saturday, February 11 – Monday, February 13

  • What: Full weekend of family activities from biking, golfing, cycling, spa day, tennis, hiking and more. Weather dependant.  Please see the weekend schedule to plan your family outing.
  • Where: 1999 Country Club Way
  • Time: Various times. May need to register for programs; please refer to the website.

Royal BC Museum

  • What: Bring the family to get a sneak peek at the hands-on interactive for the upcoming Family: Bonds and Belongings exhibition, that will open June 2, 2017. The Pacific Opera of Victoria will be performing pop-up operas in Old Town and the Forest Diorama. The Greater Victoria Public Library will have a mobile library set up outside the museum.

  • Admission: $17/adults, $11/youth, students and seniors and under 5 is FREE

Family Fun Day at the Market

  • What: Live music by Vinyl Wave, cooking demonstration, crafts, face painting, photo booth and Bumble and Hive Play Centre. TVendors on site.
  • Where: 1701 Douglas Street
  • Time: 12:30-3:30pm
  • Admission: FREE
    • Cooking Demo Part 1 at 12:30 pm – Chocolate Quinoa Cupcakes
    • Cooking Demo Part 2 at 1:30 pm – Healthy Caesar Salad with stuffed chicken
    • Cooking Demo Part 3 at 2:30 pm – Wild Mushroom and Sweet Pea Risotto

Family ‘Dog” Day

  • What: Rain or shine with your dog! Get professional photo’s taken and ask training questions to Thumbs Up Training and Walking for free. Hot beverages and goodies by donation, all proceeds going to the BCSPCA – Victoria Branch.
  • Where: Royal Bay Beach park
  • Time: 10:00am-1:00pm

Pearkes Recreation Centre

  • What: Family skating time, play games and win prizes.
  • Where: 3198 Arena Road
  • Time: 2:15-4:15pm
  • Admission: $3/person (rentals extra),  $15.50/family rate including rentals.

Saanich Commonwealth Place

  • What: Fun swims from 10:00am-12:00pm and 1:00-4:00pm, access to facility and weight room, group fit from 10:15-11:15am and water fit from 12:00-1:00pm.
  • Where: 4636 Commonwealth Place
  • Time: 10:00am-4:00pm
  • Admission: $13.50 family rate for swimming

Crystal Pool & Fitness Centre

  • What: Fun afternoon activities for the whole family. Family fun swim, WIBIT, Tarzan rope and waterslides.
  • Where: 2275 Quadra Street
  • Time: 1:00-4:00pm
  • Admission: FREE after 1:00pm

Esquimalt Recreation Centre

  • What: Enjoy a day full of activities from swimming, skating, face painting, bouncy castle and more. BBQ on site, food for purchase.
  • Where: 1229 Esquimalt Road
  • Time: 10:30am-3:00pm
  • Admission: FREE
    • Bouncy castle and toddler zone from 10:30-11:45 am
    • Face painting from 10:30am-12:30pm
    • Lions BBQ Fundraiser from 11:30am-1:00pm
    • Family yoga class from 12:00-12:45 pm
    • Donald Dunphy magician from 12:15-1:00 pm
    • Esquimalt Anglers family swim from 1:00-4:00 pm
    • Family skate from 1:00-2:50 pm

Family Arts Festival

  • What: Kids of all ages will have the opportunity to use their imagination, creativity, discovery and explore the world of visual arts, dance, music and theatre. All activities led by the Arts Centre staff and guest from Greater Victoria.
  • Where: Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, 3220 Cedar Hill Road
  • Time: 11:00am-3:00pm
  • Admission: FREE

West Shore Parks and Recreation

  • What: Skating from 1:00-2:30 pm; swimming from 1:00-4:30 pm and golfing for children under 16 accompanied by a paying adult.
  • Where: 1767 Island Highway, Colwood
  • Admission: FREE

Westhills Arena

  • What: Enjoy an hour of skating, organize by Daniel Fanizza. RSVP at 250-915-2136 or email at daniel.fanizza@raymond-james.ca
  • Where: 1089 Langford Parkway
  • Time: 12:00-1:00pm
  • Admission: FREE

Robert Bateman Centre 

  • What: Bring the children and view Robert’s largest permanent collection of work. No admission fee for children under 18 years old.
  • Where: 470 Belleville Street
  • Time: 10:00am-5:00pm
  • Admission: FREE for children

Panorama Recreation Centre

  • What: Swimming from 1:30-3:00 pm, skating from 1:00-2:20 pm, access to the weight room and fitness classes sponsored by Peninsula Co-op.
  • Where: 1885 Forest Park Drive
  • Time: 7:30am-8:00pm
  • Admission: FREE

SEAPARC Leisure Complex

  • What: Swimming from 12:00-6:00pm, family fun skate from 12:00-3:00pm and family & friends hockey from 3:15-5:00pm
  • Where: 2168 Phillips Road
  • Time: 12:00-6:00pm
