(UPDATED with itinerary) Will Prince George meet Prince George, will the Royals meet the Royals?

Share

It might be a sports marketers dream, or it might just create fantastic – if not confusing – worldwide headlines.

The WHL hockey schedule was set weeks ago, but then along came the Royals.  The British ones, that is.  Last week’s announcement of the Canadian visit of Prince William, his wife Kate, and their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, has many excited about their possible activities while they stop in Victoria several times on their eight-day trip.

And from the perspective of the staff in the Victoria Royals hockey office, the timing of the visit looks particularly intriguing.

William and Kate are due to arrive in Victoria on September 24th.  That same night, the Royals hockey team faces off against – wait for it – the Prince George Cougars, at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre.  And of course there is at least some history of the British family dropping a ceremonial puck at a game, as Queen Elizabeth did at a Canucks game in 2002, accompanied by Wayne Gretzky.

The hockey team Royals have already started at least a light-hearted social media campaign on Facebook and twitter, and CHEK News has picked up on the story, but there is no word yet if a behind-the-scenes effort to secure the British Royals’ appearance at the game is in the works.

UPDATE:  September 16, 2016, a more detailed itinerary was released today, (but no mention of the Royals hockey game) here are the days the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be in Victoria:

Saturday, September 24th: The family will travel to Victoria with the Royal Canadian Air Force and will be greeted at Victoria Airport before moving to Government House – where they will be based throughout the tour – for a very brief stop.

That afternoon they will then make their way to British Columbia’s Parliament Buildings. Here they will officially open their tour by paying respects at Victoria’s Cenotaph and will unveil a new plaque paying tribute to the veterans of Canada’s involvement in the Afghanistan conflict. The official welcome to Canada then gets underway, featuring an honour guard and speeches. *This official welcome will be open to the public.

Monday 26th September: The couple will return to Victoria in the evening, and will attend a reception hosted by the province of British Columbia at Government House.

Thursday 29th September: The Duke and Duchess will attend a children’s party on the grounds of Government House. A group of military families have been invited to share the  morning with plenty of surprises for the children. The rest of the day will provide The Duke and Duchess some private time with their children.

Saturday 1st October:  The first engagement will be a visit to the Cridge Centre for the Family. The Duke and Duchess will then then visit a local café where they will meet with families that have been supported by the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre.

Then they will board a tall-ship operated by the Sail and Life Training Society, a charity that uses the power of sailing to give young people skills and direction in their lives. The Duke and Duchess will have a chance to talk to these young people about their work while actively taking part in helping to sail the tall ship, before docking in the inner harbour.

Later that afternoon The Duke and Duchess end their tour by taking part in a *public official departure ceremony at Victoria Harbour Airport. They will then board a float plane and will have a brief tour of the southern tip of Vancouver Island before departing Canada with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
