The Prodigy Group, a group of community leaders in the Greater Victoria area, is giving back to the community this fall with its event “TP the Town Victoria.” The event’s goal is to provide toilet paper to the Mustard Seed Food Bank for families in need.
Many families are often financially forced to choose between food or toilet paper, so the Prodigy Group hopes the donations of toilet paper to the Mustard Seed will help eliminate this difficult choice.
Victoria Buzz fan Heather Millar-Eichel, told us when her boys were little they would ask “why are we using brown, paper napkins from the donut store instead of toilet paper mom?” Millar-Eichel said she didn’t have the heart to say she couldn’t afford toilet paper, and simply told the boys she forgot to buy some. “We are doing much better today thank goodness. These small donations make a big difference,” she added.
The event takes place on Saturday, October 1, from 9am to 3pm. Five grocery stores will be participating, including:
- Country Grocer – Royal Oak, 4420 West Saanich Road
- Save on Foods – Saanich (Uptown), 3510 Blanshard Street
- Save on Foods – Fort and Foul Bay, 1950 Foul Bay Road
- Save on Foods – Westside Village, 172 Wilson Street
- Country Grocer – Esquimalt, 1153 Esquimalt Road
It’s easy to participate: all you have to do is stop by one of the aforementioned stores, purchase toilet paper and leave a package or two in the Mustard Seed Food Bank bin. The toilet paper will then be collected and given to families and those who need it the most.
Although the event was a success last year, the group is hoping to see stronger participation this year.
“Even though we raised an enormous amount of toilet paper [last year], the need is so great that our donations only lasted three months. We’re hoping this year to raise more donations and awareness for a very obvious need in our community,” said Shaun Cerisano, co-founder of TP the Town and Vice Chair of the Prodigy Group, in a press release.
