“Go Topless Day” is this Sunday in Victoria

Share

Our local Victoria weather is taking a bit of a cooler twist this weekend, but with highs of 17 degrees in the forecast, it’ll likely still be warm enough for men and women to discard their tops to celebrate the 8th annual Go Topless Day on Sunday.

Go Topless Day always falls at the Sunday closest to Women’s Equality Day, Aug 26.  It is indeed on Aug 26, 1920 that women earned their right to vote on the basis of Gender Equality, in the US.  In 1971, the US Congress made Aug 26 into a nationally recognized date and named it “Women’s Equality Day”.  The president of the United States is summoned to commemorate this date each year.

60 events are anticipated to take place this year, wordwide.  In Canada, organized events are being held in Vancouver, Saskatoon, and Montreal.  In 2013, the Vancouver parade drew more followers and photographers than participants, according to some news reports.

We don’t know of any organized events in Victoria, but you can drop us a line at tips@victoriabuzz.com if you are organizing one, and we’ll update this article with details.
