Hate being attacked by crows? There is an online map for that!

Share

There is now a handy online tool to keep an eye on those pesky crows. The birds are particularly aggressive during the spring, when they are protecting their nests.

Instructors at Langara College in Vancouver have developed an online interactive map showing crow attacks. The crow map allows people to mark spots where they’ve encountered aggressive crows, and give a brief summary of what happened.

Since launching the CrowTrax, dozens of people have filed entries saying they had been attacked by crows in the Greater Victoria area.

We asked Victoria Buzz fans to share their stories of being attacked, here are some of them:

I was walking back from Langford parkway and Jacklin rd intersection on my lunch break with my pizza and from the intersection down heading back to work this crow was hopping beside me 2 ft away. At first i thought it was humorous until he tried inching closer cawing at me then another one came along and then another and soon several crows and that one peskie crow went right for my hand with my food in it and the others tried to follow suit lol it was the first time i had ever encountered something like that” – Ryan Leslie

YES, YES, and YES (more than a few times). My black haired ponytail flapping in the air must have been considered dangerous. First time this happened, I shouted at him/her “DID YOU JUST FLICK ME?!?!?” A kid who witnessed the whole thing was on the ground laughing. AND, they (crows) do remember you… I had to take a detour for a while…” – Akiko Hayashi

Yes. A few days ago in the downtown library entrance. Two crows were on the large sculpture in there and started squawking loudly when I walked in and one dive bombed my head as I passed.” – Kiki Empey

This baby crows mother would attack my family every day coming in and out of the house. This baby bird Nest is right up above in those bushes in our front yard. The baby crow stage hopping around from place to place in our front yard for a couple of days before it moved on. But getting myself and 3 kids to our car was quite the challenge.” – Leah Gilliam

This one isn’t quite an “attack” but too funny not to share:

I have story about a story about a crow, but it’s not about being attacked by one. Many years ago there was crow that used to hang around at Victoria General Hospital. He stole food, cigarettes, money, pretty much every thing. One time someone lit a cigarette and put it in the crow’s mouth. He was puffing away on it and smoke was coming out of his mouth. The crow had to be tame. He was hilarious. Another time someone was eating outside, crow landed on their shoulder, and he started pecking away at food.” – Tyrone Smith
